Time and Experience: Reflections on Visual Collecting

My Opinions

Let me tell you. I started pictorially documenting my collection back in 1997 with a "VGA Camera" that took (at the time) stunning 640px x 480px images. Using Paintshop Pro v7 on Windows 95 I got pretty good editing out the backgrounds. The image on the left is a sculpted schoolbox of Jar Jar Binks manufactured by Impact, Inc. that I shot and edited in 1999. At the time I had impressed myself by being able to capture and present the detail of the piece visually.

The image on the right is the same schoolbox, unearthed from my collection, and photographed at 14 megapixels. The image on the left is 1:1. That's the entire photo in size. The photo on the right is only shown at 12% of it's actual size...

The Time Has Come For History To Repeat...

My Opinions

Today we're going to party like it's 1985!

Sometimes if we express the same opinion for long enough, we become so comfortable with it that we believe it's true without ever stopping to reexamine it.

There's one collectible that I personally obtain every one of, yet advise others to avoid collecting any more of than they have to... Calendars!

Calendars are in the 'paper goods' category, and are wonderful tools to track days, appointments, and holidays throughout the year while also getting to see some wonderful monthly images of our favorite film saga. After the year has expired though, there is nothing remarkable about the abundantly produced calendars that would give them any cause at all to retain their retail value, much less appreciate or gain in any value for collectors.

September 11th

My Opinions
In Remembrance of September 11, 2001 there will be no posts today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims, their families, and their communities. God bless America.

Then and Now

My Opinions
Sith Lord Bop Bags (Darth Bop-alots?)

While trolling through the Star Wars check lists from yesterday's feature, I found myself in the Bop Bags. Being in such a peculiar place, I observed that both the vintage and modern lines were represented in this obscure corner of collecting, and todays Collectible Showcase was born!

Super Collector - I'll Be Back!

My Opinions

Book #5 Is Going To Press!

A hard drive crash followed by a death in the immediate family, during the mad dash to finish up the 5th edition of the Star Wars Super Collector's Wish Book have set back the website updates. The Clone Wars license has been producing some really unique international collectibles that I can't wait to start featuring. Until then... I'm back to photography and production. Make sure you pre-order your copy from Amazon.com for an AMAZING $19.77! (cover price will still be $29.95)

In The Eye of The Behold, Art Is!

My Opinions
And Now For Something Completely Different!

Buy, buy, buy. Collect, collect, collect. Unbelievable as is may be, there are more ways to enjoy Star Wars than through acquisitions. Take Fan art for instance.

Molten Mustafar Lava Cakes

My Opinions
Star Wars Chicks Rule The Galaxy!

It was an odd Google chase. I wondered about the existence of any pewter Clone Wars collectibles, which lead to chess sets, which somehow ended up at the StarWarsChicks.com site. (???)

What I found there was a recipe for Molten Mustafar Lava Cakes which sounds absolutely heavenly!

How To Sell Your Collection

My Opinions

Finally - A One Stop Article On How To Get Out From Under It All

Geoffrey T Carlton cannot buy it all. :)

With the slow down of the U.S. economy, I receive daily emails with people asking me if I want their Star Wars collections... cheap. As much new "stuff" is accumulating in my home, I don't dare start buying bunches of 'spares' which I myself cannot move along to good homes.

In the past I sent people with great collections along to specific companies who buy less common goods. For those collectors who have a whole slew of find-them-everywhere pieces, I break the bad news: "You don't want it anymore and nobody else wants it either."

After studying buyer communities, I have finally come up with a single document going over the process to successfully sell your collection. Even if you're still in the game, as I am, it's valuable information to file away for a later day...

Where Have All The Super Collectors Gone To?

My Opinions

KFC Chicken Buckets
Where have all the Super Collectors gone to???

Once upon a time, there were collectors who loved to find Star Wars 'stuff'. It didn't have to be valuable or a special limited edition or even part of any ongoing product line. Often the weirder the better.

Today while trolling through eBay I found these four (okay five) KFC buckets about to close for $1.47 each, or $1.83 each if you discard the duplicate. They're 9 years old now and so should be classified as collectible food service paper goods. If somebody was 10 years old when The Phantom Menace came out, they would have graduated high school by now and these might have brought about fond childhood memories of picnics - or something.

Happy New Years - 2008

My Opinions
Quick! Rush to eBay and buy a 1980 Calendar!
In mid 2007 we put together an article on re-using aging Star Wars calendars, and at that time we charted all compatible years from 1978 until 2024. (We like to think ahead.)

Time To Buy More ... Of The Same Thing??

My Opinions
Star Wars Galactic Heroes Single Figures Wave 1
Of course I read through all of the online catalogs I post here... It's the best (and only) way to budget the collecting allowance and brace myself for whatever is coming up 'next'.

Unfortunately, the word is out that there's something NEW coming; and you probably already have it.

Top 232 Star Wars Lines Improved By Replacing A Word With \"Pants\"

My Opinions
The Keepers Of Lists Welcome You

Back in the days of when the internet was young to the public (around 1995 or so...) I worked for a company who had a 128k ISDN line. Since the common connection was 28.8k - dial up - the ISDN seemed to be of incredible speed. Websites were still simple in design and clever in their content. One of my favorite sites was, and probably still is... The Keepers of Lists

StarWarsGuide.net Seeks To Add Two Volunteers

(Okay... that's a mighty large sign to hang out, but I thought it would be a good attention getter for the casual browser who happens to check out the main page.)

With SDCC wrapping up and the 30th anniversary on the horizon, there has certainly been no shortage of news, information, rumors and speculation.

Boxes still show up daily, expanding my collection diary by up to 20 items a week. Store finds are plentiful and often (see tomorrow's article on the brand new Star Wars Christmas ornaments on sale NOW at stores...), yet the website has gone nearly a month with no updates. You might be just the person to remedy that situation.

Some People Collect Loose Figures...

My Opinions
When rushed, always stop for at least two seconds and do the math.

Star Wars George Lucas in Stormtrooper Disguise. That's the 2006 holy grail mail-in figure, FREE with five specific proof-of-purchases from the new vintage style Star Wars Ultimate Galactic Hunt action figures (plus postage).

Today the eBay auctions started; not for the action figure, but for the fully completed redemption certificate.

Last One Standing?

My Opinions

Micromachines Update

These two beauties will soon be appearing again in My Collection Diary, but for now they are the focus of my speculation. Several of my sub-collections have holes in them where the pieces that are virtually impossible to find should go... Like the two pieces pictured above.

Star Wars - The Musical

My Opinions

One of the most enjoyable Fan Productions ever...

You'll find a home-burned CD of the musical in my car, my study, and my office. As a fan-made project, it's the only way you're able to listen to this incredible production, besides the internet.

Revenge of the Super_Collector

My Opinions

(Return of the Super_Collector)

Thank you to my many friends and people who wrote in to make sure everything was okay. In late March I was pushing to promote the Star Wars Collector's Database from a mostly stable wide beta version to a solid public version before the April 2nd onslaught of goods. After a 2-week long shopping spree I geared up for the release of my 3rd book. Then came Celebration III, media interviews for the new movie, the new movie itself, and now I'm unburrying myself from the mountain of goods I've accumulated that need to be photograhed, documented, added to the database, and put away. =)

PEZ Tells Collectors Exactly How Much They\'re Worth

My Opinions

The Most Dedicated Star Wars Collectors Get Burned The Worst

Non-collectors look at my boxed crystal PEZ set... you know the one; it's the limited edition of 10,000... and ask, "You paid how much???"

For most other collectibles I can proudly announce numbers. Either I've gotten a great deal, or an item is fantastically valuable. Otherwise the price isn't even part of conversation. In the case of my crystal PEZ dispensers, I must mumble sheepishly, "$75 for the set... direct from PEZ."
